Gardening Time!

As you know a few weeks ago my garden was nothing but a 5 foot pile of rocks and dirt.

Now, thanks to Mark's hardwork, we have a nice level spot for the garden.

There is a small pile of dirt leftover, but we've got a good enough start for this year!

So the other day we all put in a family effort to put the final touches on the garden space

and get the thing planted!  It's only the middle of June!  But hey!

I don't have much negative to say about my house or the area we live in, but one thing would be the soil.

Because of the Teton Dam breaking years ago, this area was flooded and all the top soil got swept away..

We are now left with nothing but a gravel pit.... literally.

But I have made a deal with the girls that every wheelbarrow load full of rocks equals going out for ice cream.  

A total win-win for me!  So far we have picked 3 loads of rocks.

Even Lucy knows the more rocks we pick is a good thing!!!

Besides the ice cream, the girls other favorite part is getting to ride in the wheelbarrow.

Once we got the "top" layer of rocks cleared away, Mark made us nice straight rows to plant the seeds in.

Because of the soil and this being our first time gardening out here, we decided to plant only pumpkins and gourds.

If we are successful than we'll have our pumpkins for the fall (with a few extra to sell for the girls)

If not....at least we're not counting on a bountiful harvest to can and preserve!

It was a joint effort to plant the seeds, and the girls did great taking their turns.

Even Lucy got to plant her own row!

It's a far cry from a perfect garden, but it's ours and it's beautiful to us.
